Ethanol May be the Right Fuel . . .
But Milford is the WRONG Location
for a Fuel Refinery

Our Position:  Milford & Syracuse support industry with proper zoning.  A fuel refinery is a heavy industry and should be located accordingly.  The proposed location of the Verasun refinery borders Milford's town limit and is TOO CLOSE to our schools, homes, and businesses.  Our community's quality of life, future economic growth, property values, health, and safety will be negatively impacted by a refinery's presence.

Commissioner Jackson Announces VeraSun Will NOT Pursue the Milford Site

A front page article in Warsaw's Times Union declares "VeraSun Energy has decided not to build an ethanol plant just outside the town of Milford". A similar story appeared on the same day in the Goshen News.

The Northern Lakes Area Concerned Citizens Association wants to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the many area residents who took the time to learn about the effects a fuel refinery could have on our area's health, safety and quality of life.  Thank you to the more than 1800 residents who signed our petition, and to all those who wrote letters, placed signs, attended meetings and made donations.  Without your efforts we could not have made a difference.

We also want to thank our elected officials:  Milford Town Board members Gary Hurd and Bob Cockburn; County Commissioners Brad Jackson, Ron Truex, and Bob Conley; State Representative Dave Wolkins; and Governor Mitch Daniels.  We appreciate their efforts to consider all sides of the debate and to fairly represent the residents of Milford & Syracuse.  Dan Richard and his staff at the Area Planning office also deserve a special thank you for their patience with our many phone calls and questions.

And finally, we thank VeraSun for hearing the voices of the Milford/Syracuse community.

GIS Map of Milford
The Kosciusko County GIS office prepared this map of the Milford area, which you can download and print.  Ann Schlabach shared a poster-size version with the County Commissioners at their February 20 meeting.  The inner circle indicates a distance of one-half mile from the refinery site;  there are over 100 homes within this circle.  The second circle marks one mile from the refinery;  more than 600 additional homes fall within this range, as well as Milford's schools & daycare, and the entire downtown district.  The largest circle marks a distance of 2.5 miles from the refinery site, and includes most of Waubee Lake and all of Camelot Lake.

WRSW Radio Interview with Governor Daniels About the Milford Ethanol Issue
During an interview with Governor Mitch Daniels on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, anchor Stacy Page asked the governor for his views on Milford's opposition to the proposed ethanol refinery.  Two quotes from his response:  "Local people should have the determination", and "These things should never go where local folks truly, sincerely think it will subtract and not add to the quality of life".
You can listen to Governor Daniels' full response here.
